Train collision in southwest Britain injures several people

LONDON: Two trains collided at Fisherton Tunnel in the southwestern English city of Salisbury on Sunday, injuring a number of people, police said, declaring the crash a major incident. “A number of people have been injured, but thankfully no one has died,” British transport police said. While most of the people are “walking wounded”, a small number of injured people, including the driver, have been taken to the hospital, the police said in a statement. Fire trucks and ambulances were at the scene near Salisbury station, police said. The Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said it has helped evacuate approximately 100 people. The BBC quoted a spokesman for Network Rail, a track operator, as saying the rear carriage of one train derailed after striking an object on its approach to Salisbury station and the incident disabled all signalling in the area. Pakistan sends another tranche of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has handed over three more trucks loaded with relief goods to Afghanistan as part of its efforts to avert the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country, ARY News reported. The trucks carrying 28 tons of essential commodities were handed over to Afghan authorities at the Torkham crossing. The aid was sent by Pak-Afghan Cooperation Forum and Save the Children. COVID-19 infects another 213 in Sindh

KARACHI: One more patient of coronavirus died overnight in Sindh province, lifting the death toll to 7,568, ARY News reported. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in a statement said that one more patient of COVID-19 died in past 24 hours, lifting the death toll to 7,568 that constituted a 1.6 percent death rate. Mr. Shah said that 10,991 samples were tested which detected 213 cases that constituted 1.9 percent current detection rate. He added that so far 6,417,533 tests have been conducted against which 469,183 cases were diagnosed, of them 95.9 percent or 449,943 patients have recovered, including 544 overnight. The CM said that currently, 11,672 patients were under treatment, of them 11,432 were in home isolation, 25 at isolation centers and 215 at different hospitals. 193 dengue cases reported in KP in a day

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has continued to report a spike in dengue fever cases as 193 new cases of mosquito-borne fever cases were reported during the last 24 hours, ARY News reported on Sunday. According to a report issued by KP Directorate General Health Services, the death toll due to dengue fever in the province stands at eight. The province has so far reported 6,803 dengue cases, whereas, the number of active cases stood at 1,462. Earlier in the day, another patient of dengue hemorrhagic fever died in Islamabad during the previous 24 hours, taking this year’s tally to 13. 102 more people were diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease in the capital during this period. Saudi banks start updating payments’ system for 3-month renewal of iqamas

RIYADH: Saudi banks have started updating their government payments system for the issuance and renewal of residency permits (iqamas) that are linked to work permits for a minimum period of three months. The payments of iqama fee can be made on a quarterly or half-yearly basis following the recently updated government payments system. The updation will facilitate the completion of procedures for the issuance and renewal of iqamas for the required period through the online platforms of Absher Business, Muqeem, and Qiwa under the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. Following the recent amendments in the government payment system, Saudi banks will accept the payment of the fee for the work permit by the employer for a minimum period of three months or multiples of six months, nine months or a whole year. ISLAMABAD: At least one person was killed and four others sustained injuries in a massive explosion due to a gas leak at residential flats in Islamabad’s Sector H-13, ARY News reported. LAHORE: Unidentified men opened fire at the residence of a trader in Lahore after refusing to pay extortion of Rs5 million as police had launched a probe into the matter, ARY NEWS reported. TLP agreement: Containers being removed from River Jhelum bridges, GT road

JHELUM: The government has started removing containers from bridges over River Jhelum which was dubbed as the last defence line to stop the Islamabad marchers and GT Road following an agreement with outlawed Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), ARY NEWS reported. Mystery shrouds Sindh University professor’ murder as police probe

KARACHI: Police have yet to solve a mystery around the murder of a Sindh University Professor Dr. Zain ul Abdin after initially, it was claimed to be murder during a mugging, ARY NEWS reported. FIA arrests suspect allegedly involved in unblocking NICs, issuing passports

KARACHI: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) human trafficking cell has arrested a prime suspect allegedly involved in unblocking the national identity card (NIC) and managing the issuance of passports, ARY NEWS reported. According to FIA officials, a Bangladeshi national identified as Sarwar Hussain, who leads a gang, has been arrested for allegedly unblocking NICs of Bangladeshi nationals. The officials said that he used to take hefty sums against managing the issuance of Pakistani passports to Bangladeshi nationals. “The suspect received Rs135,000 from a citizen,” the FIA said adding that it led to unearthing the entire gang. Bull escapes from slaughterhouse, goes on rampage

A bull escaped from a slaughterhouse in a town in Scotland and destroyed vehicles after going on a rampage. The report mentioned that the beast finally came under control after being chased by police officers in the streets of North Muirton town. It caused a local bus service to temporarily shut down its operations while a school had to close its gates for its students’ safety. In an attempt to get the bull under control, a police van looked to stop the animal by overtaking it and blocking the road. However, the attempt was of no avail as it evaded the vehicle. Hike in prices of various commodities at Utility Stores notified

ISLAMABAD: Prices of various commodities including tea, milk and others at Utility Stores across the country have gone up on Saturday, ARY NEWS reported. A notification regarding the increase in prices has also been issued with immediate effect. As per the fresh hike in prices, the price of a 950-gram tea pack for various brands has been increased between Rs100 to Rs210. The price for a 100gram jar of coffee has also gone up by Rs50, 500 gram of formula milk packet by Rs60, one kilogram of washing powder by Rs10, and 300 gram of custard by Rs5. The notification further showed a hike in the price of 300-gram corn flour by Rs20, and 250 grams of honey by Rs95 besides also increasing the price of packaged milk. On October 15 , the utility stores of Pakistan notified a whopping Rs1,090 increase in the 10-liter ghee pack which will now cost Rs3,590. KARACHI: The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has reported a cyberattack that is being investigated, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) confirmed on Saturday. However, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said that no financial loss or data breach has been observed. Pakistan sees 10 deaths, 658 more coronavirus cases

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has registered 10 deaths in the last 24 hours by coronavirus as the nationwide tally of fatalities has jumped to 28,441. According to the latest figures issued by the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC), 658 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. The number of overall confirmed cases has reached 1,271,687. Zayn Malik has filed a “no contest” plea to four counts of harassment after an argument between him and model Gigi Hadid’s mother, Yolanda Hadid. Malik was charged with four counts of harassment, according to documents filed to the Bucks County, Pennsylvania, courts. Those documents indicate a guilty plea on all four counts, but in a statement posted to Twitter, Malik wrote that he “agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago.” Each of the harassment charges is a summary offense, which is lesser crime than a misdemeanor. Doctor killed over resisting dacoits in Karachi

KARACHI: A doctor has been killed by dacoits allegedly for resisting the robbery while travelling by his car near Gulshan-e-Maymar in Karachi, ARY News reported on Friday. The firing incident took place near Yousaf Goth where the dacoits opened fire on a car, leaving a doctor dead on the spot. Rescue sources said that the slain man was identified as 45-year-old Zainul Abideen. Police said that the man was gunned down for resisting the dacoits. They added that an investigation has been launched into the incident. Commissioner Karachi forms body for demolition of Nasla Tower

KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi has constituted a committee to analyze proposals from companies interested in taking part in the demolition of Nasla Tower on the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, ARY NEWS reported. According to a notification, the eight-member committee would be led by deputy commissioner East and would include Director General (DG) Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), SSP East, senior director anti-encroachment, Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) official, and others. The committee would review all proposals submitted by the companies and would recommend the best firm able to do the demolition of the Nasla Tower. The committee would also devise a strategy to conduct the demolition process. Previously, the Karachi commissioner has invited applications from various companies, seeking proposals to demolish the building in a controlled blast.
