Gold rates drop in Pakistan

KARACHI: Gold prices on Tuesday extended a downward trend in the domestic market as the price of per told gold witnessed a decrease of Rs1200 in Pakistan, ARY News reported. According to Muhammad Arshad, the chairman of the All Pakistan Jewellers Manufacturers Association, the price of per told gold witnessed a decrease of Rs1200 to Rs112,600 in Pakistan. Likewise, the rate of 10 grams of gold also declined by Rs1028 to Rs 105,110. US dollar The Pakistan rupee strengthened by 0.49 paisas against the US dollar in interbank trading on Tuesday. According to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the US dollar closed at Rs 175.71 as compared to the previous day’s closing of Rs 176.20. The buying and selling rates of dollars in the open market were recorded at Rs 176.6 and Rs 178.1 respectively. Omicron COVID variant: Sindh announces fresh curbs

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Tuesday announced new curbs aimed at curtailing the spread of Omicron, a new heavily mutated Covid-19 strain, ARY News reported. According to a notification issued by Sindh Home Department, the educational activities would continue across the province. “The National Command and Operations Centre had placed Karachi, Sukkur, and Sanghar in “category B” — cities with good vaccination progress — while other cities of the province fell under “category C” — cities with low vaccination progress,” read the notification. Lawyers assault consumer court judge in Punjab’s district

MANDI BAHAUDDIN: In yet another case of assault, a group of lawyers tortured a consumer court judge in Bandi Bahauddin district of the Punjab province, ARY NEWS reported. According to police, an FIR has been registered against the group of lawyers allegedly under the anti-terrorism act. The FIR alleged that the lawyers attempted to pressurize the judge over issuing a show-cause notice to the president of the bar. “They not only assaulted the judge but also locked the doors of the court,” it said. Free Saudi visa renewal to benefit expatriates from 17 countries

RIYADH: The Saudi office of General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat) has said expatriates from 17 countries can benefit from the recent government decision to extend the validity of residency permit (iqama), exit and reentry visas and visit visas without any fee. Among 17 countries, to get free of cost visa renewal, are Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Turkey, Indonesia, Lebanon, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini (Swaziland), Brazil, Ethiopia, Vietnam, South Africa. The office of Jawazat has already started automatically extending the iqama validity and the exit and re-entry visa until January 31, 2022 without any fees or duty, which is a step they said was in line with the directives of King Salman, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. ISTANBUL: Turkey has announced state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for Pakistani patients who are facing difficulties in getting an Indian visa for liver, kidney and bone marrow transplants, ARY News reported. Inflation rate stands at 11.53pc in Nov 2021, shares PBS

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Tuesday announced that the rate of inflation in November 2021 stood at 11.53 percent, ARY NEWS reported. The PBS said that the inflation stood at 8.35 percent in November 2020, witnessing just over three percent this year. Similarly, it said that the rate of hike in prices stood at 9.32 percent in five months of the FY2021-22 as compared to 8.76 percent in a similar period of FY2020-21. A report on November 26 shared the PBS findings, highlighting a surge in prices of 20 essential items. The pulses and eggs have noted spiraling in their prices this week, said the PBS weekly report that said the collective inflation increase is 0.67 percent. Govt to start COVID-19 vaccine booster shots amid Omicron concerns

KARACHI: The federal government has decided to administer coronavirus booster shots to the general public aimed at curtailing the spread of Omicron, a new heavily mutated Covid-19 strain, ARY News reported citing sources. As per the strategy finalised by the Health Department, the government is likely to start offering Covid-19 booster shots for fully vaccinated individuals from December 1. The booster shots will be administered in phases, said sources. Pakistan sees spike in Covid-19 cases as Omicron looms

ISLAMABAD: As the threat of new Covid strain ‘Omicron’ spreading to Pakistan looms large, the country recorded a spike in new cases of the pandemic in the last 24 hours. According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) data, a total of 42,577 samples were tested, out of which 475 turned out to be positive, taking the country’s caseload to 1,284,840. Tech company offers people Rs35mil to allow their face on robot

A tech company says it will pay £150,000 (about Rs35 million) to people who allow rights of their facial imprint for a human-looking robot. Promobot, a tech firm, said it’s gearing up to launch a new line of robots that look like humans and they want these robots to be as close to reality and with as friendly a face as possible. This is the reason they want actual humans faces lent to their robots. The tech firm is of the view that they can have human faces 3D-printed to the robots to give semblance of the ‘kind and friendly’ appearance. No Covid-19 case reported from Gilgit Baltistan; active cases stand at 6

GILGIT: No case of COVID-19 has been reported from the Gilgit Baltistan region in Pakistan during the last 24 hours as the virus count stands at 10,411 in the federally administered territory, ARY NEWS reported. According to the GB health department, the number of active COVID-19 cases in the region has also declined to six as six more patients have recovered in a day. “The number of recoveries from COVID-19 stand at 10,219,” it said adding that 186 patients have so far succumbed to the deadly infection. The health department further shared that the positivity ratio in Gilgit Baltistan stands at zero with a 1.79 percent death ratio and 98.16 percent ratio of recoveries from the virus. KARACHI: The Deputy Commissioner Karachi East Asif Jan on Monday wrote a letter to District Municipal Corporation East Administrator Rehmatullah Shaikh and other relevant authorities for removal of all political flags from Karachi’s Shahrah-e-Faisal and other major roads, ARY News reported. According to a letter, political flags on Karachi roads were illegal in light of the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s order. October’s economic outlook highlights hike in remittances, imports, exports     

ISLAMABAD: Finance ministry on Monday released a monthly economic outlook for the month of October 2021, highlighting an increase in remittances, imports, exports, tax collection, large-scale manufacturing (LSM) production, and current account deficit, ARY NEWS reported. The report further highlighted a decline in non-taxable income and direct foreign investment (FDI). According to the details provided in the monthly economic outlook, the remittances saw an 11.9 percent increase during the first four months of the ongoing fiscal year 2021-22 to stand at US$10.6 billion. The report further stated that the FBR tax collection continued to increase with a 36.8 percent rise in revenue collection to stand at Rs1843 billion, however, the non-tax income declined by 27.4 percent to touch the Rs249 billion mark. Fire breaks out in Karachi shanties erect on empty plot

KARACHI: In an unsettling event on Monday in the central district of the port city, a blaze has broken out after a suspected cylinder blast that has gutted at least 30 shanties erected on an empty plot, ARY News reported. According to the rescue sources and fire brigade, at least five fire tenders have been dedicated to put it out but the fire erupted into an intense blaze. The fire ensued what apparently seemed like either a cylinder burst or PMT explosion, and it has engulfed at least 30 shanties so far, the rescue and security sources said. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has backed an initiative from Saudi Arabia to convene an Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting on Afghanistan besides also offering to host the event in Islamabad, ARY NEWS reported. Pakistan reports fewer than 200 new Covid cases

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported fewer than 200 new Covid-19 cases in the previous 24 hours, taking the infection tally to 1,284,551. According to the National Command and Operation Centre’s (NCOC) data, a total of 29,530 samples were tested, out of which 176 turned out to be positive.
