EU grants Ukraine candidate status in ‘historic moment’

Image
BRUSSELS: European leaders formally accepted Ukraine as a candidate to join the EU on Thursday, a bold geopolitical move triggered by Russia’s invasion of Kyiv but a reminder that the 27-nation bloc will need a major overhaul as it looks to enlarge again. Although it could take Ukraine and neighbouring Moldova more than a decade to qualify for membership, the decision at a two-day EU summit is symbolic step that signals the bloc’s intention to reach deep into the former Soviet Union. “A historic moment,” European Council chief Charles Michel tweeted. “Today marks a crucial step on your path towards the EU,” he said, adding: “Our future is together.” The move, which also sees Moldova being granted candidate status, kick-starts the EU’s most ambitious expansion since it welcomed Eastern European states after the Cold War. “All the people in Ukraine are watching and waiting for this decision,” said Ivan Zichenko, a 34-year-old Ukrainian from the devastated city of Kharkiv, who now li...

US Supreme Court expands gun rights, strikes down NY law

Image
WASHINGTON: The US Supreme Court on Thursday declared for the first time that the US Constitution protects an individual’s right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense, handing a landmark victory to gun rights advocates in a nation deeply divided over how to address firearms violence. The 6-3 ruling, with the court’s conservative justices in the majority and liberal justices in dissent, struck down New York state’s limits on carrying concealed handguns outside the home. The court found that the law, enacted in 1913, violated a person’s right to “keep and bear arms” under the US Constitution’s Second Amendment. The ruling, authored by Justice Clarence Thomas, declared that the Constitution protects “an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.” Thomas added: “We know of no other constitutional right that an individual may exercise only after demonstrating to government officers some special need.” The ruling could undermine similar restrictions...

Is the black hole in this optical illusion expanding?

Image
Netizens were intrigued by a viral optical illusion designed to make it look like an expanding black hole. The viral optical illusion is interesting as it tricks the mind about the size of the hole as much as the viewer stares at it. The black hole on the canvas does not move at first. However, it enlarges after being stared upon. A study published the psychologists from the University of Oslo in Norway and Ritsumeikan University in Japan stated that 86 per cent of the test subjects agreed that the black hole gets bigger. The psychologists claimed that viewers think that the expanding black hole makes the human think that they are seeing the future. The experts added it shows only 100 milliseconds of their ‘future’. It happens because of a small brief in processing information from the human eye to higher areas of the brain.
